Finding a serious relationship online in India

By The Myra team · Published October 4, 2026

For a long time, people in India who wanted a serious relationship had two main options: meet someone through friends, college or work, or go through a family-arranged process. Dating apps were seen as something for casual dating. That has changed. Many people now use apps specifically to find a long-term partner, often alongside, rather than instead of, their family's involvement.

If that is what you want, the way you use an app matters. This guide covers what helps.

Say it clearly

The most important step is also the simplest: state your intent. People who want something serious often hesitate to say so, worried that it will sound intense. In practice, being clear saves everyone time and attracts people who want the same.

On Myra you choose between a serious relationship, dating, and friendship first. Intent is a hard rule, so you are only introduced to people who chose the same thing. You do not have to filter for it yourself, and you do not need to have the awkward "so what are you looking for?" conversation to find out. The how it works page explains all of the rules introductions follow.

Read profiles for substance

When you want a long-term partner, photos tell you very little. The things that matter are values, habits and how someone thinks about their life. Look for:

  • Prompt answers that are specific and considered, rather than generic jokes.
  • Signs of how they spend their time: friendships, family, work, hobbies they stick with.
  • How they describe what they want. "Someone kind who likes long weekends at home" says more than "no drama".
  • Shared languages. In India, being able to speak comfortably with someone's family can matter a great deal. Myra treats shared languages as one of the strongest reasons for an introduction. We have written more about dating across languages in India.

Ask the real questions early, but gently

Some questions are dealbreakers, and it is better to discover them early. Children, where you want to live, how involved you expect your families to be, faith, and how you each think about money are all fair topics within the first few dates. Ask them as genuine curiosity rather than as an interview. "How do you picture your life in five years?" opens more doors than a list of requirements.

Notice how the other person responds. Someone who is thinking seriously about a relationship will usually welcome the conversation.

Move from chat to meeting

Long chats can build a version of someone in your head that the real person cannot live up to. If a conversation is going well, suggest meeting within a week or two. Keep the first meeting simple: a coffee or a walk in a busy public place. Our first-date safety guide has practical advice, and our city guides suggest places in every neighbourhood we cover.

Let things build at a sensible pace

Wanting a serious relationship does not mean rushing into one. Some signals that things are heading somewhere real:

  • You both make plans and keep them.
  • Conversations move beyond the surface to how you each handle stress, family and disagreement.
  • You meet each other's friends.
  • You talk openly about what you each want, and the answers fit.

Some signals that they might not be:

  • Pressure to commit, move in or meet family very quickly, before you know each other well.
  • Reluctance to make any plan more than a day or two in advance.
  • A story about their life that changes between meetings.

Exclusivity is a conversation, not an assumption

Many people use dating apps to talk to a few people at once in the early stages. That is normal. When you want to be exclusive, say so, and ask whether they feel the same. Do not assume that a few good dates mean you are both off the app.

When families get involved

In many Indian relationships, families become involved at some point. Talk to your partner about when and how that will happen, and what each of your families is likely to expect. Our guide to talking to your family about dating can help you plan those conversations.

Verification is the foundation, not the finish

On Myra, every profile has passed a live selfie check before anyone can see it, so you know the person is real and matches their photos. That is a starting point. It does not tell you whether someone is honest about their intentions, which is why you should still take your time and pay attention. Read why Myra verifies every profile to understand exactly what the check means.

Finding a serious partner takes patience. A clear intent, a small number of well-matched introductions and honest conversations will get you there faster than endless swiping ever could.
