Clement Town is a peaceful cantonment area in south Dehradun, best known for the Mindrolling Monastery and its towering Buddha stupa, one of the largest in the world. The area has a large Tibetan community, with cafés serving momos, thukpa and butter tea, and quiet, green streets shaded by old trees. For Myra members, Clement Town offers a calm, unusual setting for a first or second date. Introductions here often include people from Turner Road, Subhash Nagar, Majra, Mohabbewala and the ISBT area, depending on your distance limit. A visit to the monastery gardens, followed by tea in a Tibetan café, is a relaxed and memorable outing. The monastery is open to visitors and its gardens are peaceful in the late afternoon, though it is a place of worship, so visit respectfully and quietly. Many members appreciate that Clement Town is calmer than the city centre, which makes it easier to have a real conversation without noise or crowds. Losar, the Tibetan new year, is celebrated here with colour and music, and the monastery is especially beautiful at that time. On ordinary days, weekday afternoons are the calmest time to visit, when the gardens are almost empty and the cafés are quiet enough for a long, unhurried talk over a pot of tea. Clement Town was established in the colonial era and later became home to Tibetan refugees from the 1960s onward. The Mindrolling Monastery’s Great Stupa, completed in 2002, is about 60 metres tall and has shrine rooms on each floor, with views over the valley from the top.
