Rajwada is the historic heart of Indore, centred on the seven-storey palace built by the Holkar dynasty over two centuries ago. Around it lie the old city’s busy markets, temples and narrow lanes, including the famous Sarafa Bazaar, which turns into a night food market after the jewellery shops close. For Myra members, the Rajwada area offers a memorable, flavourful setting for a first or second date. Introductions here often include people from Jawahar Marg, Sarafa, Malharganj, Kothari Market and Chhatri Bagh. Many families have lived in the old city for generations, and local members often know the best snack stalls and sweet shops. A walk around the palace and the markets, followed by a late-evening visit to Sarafa, is a classic Indori outing. Because the area is extremely busy, it is worth meeting at a clear landmark, such as the palace gate, and staying on the main streets. The old city is at its most atmospheric after dark, when the food stalls light up. In daylight, the palace and the chhatris nearby make a calm, interesting walk. The palace has been damaged by fire three times in its history, most recently in the 1984 riots, and was carefully restored afterwards.
