Back to Jaipur

Jaipur’s Old City, the Pink City, was planned in the eighteenth century with wide, straight bazaars and a grid of neighbourhoods inside its walls. Today it is home to the Hawa Mahal, the City Palace and Jantar Mantar, as well as some of India’s most famous markets for textiles, jewellery and handicrafts. For Myra members, the Old City is a memorable place for a first or second date, full of colour, history and stories. Introductions here often include people from Ramganj, Chandpole, Kishanpole, Johari Bazaar and Tripolia. Many families have lived in the walled city for generations, so local members often know the best snacks, rooftops and hidden courtyards. Rooftop cafés opposite the Hawa Mahal offer views over the bazaar, and the evening light turns the pink walls a deep orange. Because the area is busy with visitors, it feels lively and public, but it can also be overwhelming, so plan to meet at a clear landmark and choose a calm café to sit and talk. Its rose-pink colour dates from 1876, when the city was painted to welcome the Prince of Wales.

Where to meet in Old City

  • Hawa Mahal rooftop cafés

Cafés across the road from the Palace of Winds, with views of its famous façade. Best in the late afternoon.

  • City Palace and Jantar Mantar

Two of the city’s best-known sights, next to each other. A good daytime outing with plenty to talk about.

  • Johari Bazaar lassi stop

Thick, creamy lassi in clay cups from a famous old shop, a classic Jaipur treat.

  • Galta Ji temple

A temple complex in the hills on the edge of the old city, known for its natural springs and monkeys. Go in daylight.

Getting around

Chandpole and Badi Chaupar stations on the Pink Line Metro serve the walled city. E-rickshaws and autos are the best way through the bazaars.

Good to know

  • Bazaars are crowded and touts are common. Keep belongings close and decline offers firmly.
  • Narrow lanes can be confusing at night. Meet at a landmark and leave along the main bazaar road.
