Back to Kochi

Fort Kochi is the old heart of the city, a quiet peninsula of colonial houses, churches, art cafés and tree-lined streets facing the Arabian Sea. It is famous for its Chinese fishing nets, its heritage buildings and its role as the main venue of the Kochi-Muziris Biennale. For Myra members, Fort Kochi is one of the most beautiful places in Kerala for a first or second date, with plenty of walkable streets and calm cafés. Introductions here often include people from Mattancherry, Thoppumpady, Palluruthy, Vypin and, with a larger distance limit, Ernakulam across the water. A sunset walk along the beach, followed by tea in a heritage café, is a classic first date here. Because the area is also popular with visitors, the streets stay lively in the evening, especially during the cooler months from November to February. Bicycles can be hired in the area, and cycling slowly through the old streets together is a lovely way to explore. The Dutch Palace in Mattancherry, with its murals from the Ramayana, and the Santa Cruz Basilica are both within an easy walk.

Where to meet in Fort Kochi

  • Chinese fishing nets at sunset

Watch the fishermen work the giant nets as the sun sets over the sea. Busy and atmospheric.

  • Heritage cafés on Princess Street

Cafés in old colonial buildings, ideal for a long conversation over coffee and cake.

  • St. Francis Church and Vasco da Gama Square

Historic landmarks within a short walk, good for an unhurried afternoon stroll.

  • Art galleries and warehouses

Small galleries and converted warehouses host exhibitions throughout the year.

Getting around

Ferries and the Kochi Water Metro connect Fort Kochi to Ernakulam and Vypin. Autos are easy to find, and the old streets are best explored on foot or by bicycle. Road access is via the Thoppumpady bridges.

Good to know

  • Ferry services stop at night. Check the last boat before you stay late.
  • Beach currents are dangerous. Do not swim, even if the water looks calm.
