New Town, also known as Rajarhat, is Kolkata’s newest planned township, with wide roads, high-rise apartments, technology campuses and some of the city’s largest public parks. It feels very different from the old city: modern, spacious and growing quickly. Many young professionals and families live here, which makes it an active area on Myra. Introductions in New Town often include people from Salt Lake, Kestopur, Baguiati, Rajarhat Gopalpur and the airport area. First dates here tend to make the most of the open spaces, such as a walk in Eco Park or a visit to the observation deck at Biswa Bangla Gate. The township also has several malls and food streets, which are useful in summer heat or monsoon rain. Because distances in New Town are large, it is worth choosing a meeting place close to where at least one of you lives. Unlike the old city, New Town was designed as a smart city with dedicated cycle tracks, a large cancer hospital and Rabindra Tirtha, a cultural centre named after Tagore with exhibition halls and a garden. On Sundays, the wide boulevards near Eco Park are popular for cycling, and the township’s food streets stay open late, serving everything from fish fry to rolls.

Eco Park
A huge park with themed gardens, a lake, cycling paths and cafés. Plan a few hours in the late afternoon; there is an entry fee.
Biswa Bangla Gate
An observation deck and restaurant above the road, with views over the township. Book ahead for the evening.
Mother’s Wax Museum and surroundings
A light-hearted museum near Eco Park, good for a fun daytime outing that gives you plenty to talk about.
Getting around
The Purple Line Metro to the airport passes through parts of New Town, and many people use cab apps and buses. Distances between action areas are long, so plan your route in advance.
Good to know
- Some arterial roads are deserted late at night. Book a ride from the venue rather than walking to a main road.
- Eco Park closes in the evening; leave with other visitors before closing time.
