Hazratganj is the heart of Lucknow, a grand boulevard of colonial-era buildings, shops, cafés and cinemas that has been the city’s favourite place for an evening stroll for over a century. The tradition of ganjing, walking up and down the street to see and be seen, is still very much alive, and the area was restored a few years ago with uniform façades and wide pavements. For Myra members, Hazratganj is the most central and recognisable place to meet in the city. Introductions here often include people from Lalbagh, Narhi, Kaiserbagh, Mahanagar and Gokhale Marg. A first date might be a coffee in an old café, a browse in a bookshop or a slow walk followed by kulfi. Because the area is busy with families and students every evening, it feels comfortable and public. Many members appreciate that Hazratganj is equally convenient for people from the old city and from the newer eastern suburbs, making it a fair halfway point for both. In winter, the boulevard hosts festivals and book fairs nearby, which make good second dates. The boulevard was founded by Nawab Amjad Ali Shah in the 1840s, and its façades were restored in uniform colours during a makeover around 2010.
