Alkapuri is Vadodara’s most popular commercial and residential neighbourhood, located just west of the railway station. Its main road, RC Dutt Road, and the streets around it are lined with cafés, restaurants, shops, hotels and offices, and it is one of the busiest places in the city for an evening out. For Myra members, Alkapuri is the most natural place in Vadodara for a first coffee, thanks to its central location and wide choice. Introductions here often include people from Race Course, Productivity Road, Sampatrao Colony, Jetalpur and Gotri, depending on your distance limit. The neighbourhood is lively in the evening, with families and young people out shopping and eating, which makes it comfortable and public. A coffee in one of the many cafés, followed by a short walk, is a simple first date. For a quieter setting, the cafés in the residential lanes behind the main road offer a calmer space to talk. During the cooler months, outdoor seating at several cafés here is especially pleasant in the evening. Alkapuri was developed in the mid-twentieth century as a modern residential suburb next to the railway station. RC Dutt Road honours Romesh Chunder Dutt, an economist and administrator who served as Diwan of the princely state of Baroda under Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III. The neighbourhood’s old bungalows with gardens now sit alongside hotels and office blocks, and in the evening the paan shops and juice centres near the station side draw a cheerful crowd. Kirti Mandir, a memorial to the Gaekwad family decorated with murals by Nandalal Bose, is a short ride away. The mix of old Baroda and new Vadodara makes it an interesting place to walk. The Sayaji Garden, laid out by the Gaekwads in 1879, is less than two kilometres away and is perfect for a weekend walk among its huge old trees, fountains and the toy train that children love.
