Back to Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad’s Walled City is the oldest part of the city, founded in the fifteenth century and recognised as India’s first UNESCO World Heritage City. Its neighbourhoods, called pols, are made up of narrow lanes, carved wooden houses, temples, mosques and hidden courtyards. For Myra members, the old city offers some of the most memorable first-date experiences in Ahmedabad, from a morning heritage walk to a late-night meal at the Manek Chowk food market. Introductions here often include people from Khadia, Kalupur, Raipur, Jamalpur and Shahpur. Many families have lived in the pols for generations, and the area has a strong sense of community, so meetings tend to happen at well-known landmarks and in public spaces. If one of you lives in the newer western suburbs, the old city is a fun place to explore together, with stories behind every corner. Plan your visit for the cooler hours of the day, as the lanes can get very warm in summer. Look out for the bird feeders, called chabutras, that stand in many pol squares, some carved with great detail and still in daily use.

Where to meet in Walled City

  • Morning heritage walk

Guided walks through the pols start early in the morning. A great way to talk while discovering the city’s history.

  • Manek Chowk food market

A jewellery market by day that becomes a famous food street at night. Busy, lively and a true Ahmedabad experience.

  • Sidi Saiyyed Mosque

Known for its intricate stone lattice windows. Visit respectfully and dress modestly.

  • Bhadra Fort and Teen Darwaza

Historic gates and the fort at the heart of the old city, surrounded by busy markets.

Getting around

Kalupur railway station and the Metro’s East–West line serve the old city. Autos are the best way through the narrow lanes; cars struggle with traffic and parking.

Good to know

  • Lanes are narrow and confusing. Meet at a landmark and keep your phone charged for maps.
  • Manek Chowk is very crowded late at night. Keep valuables secure and leave together with the crowd.
