Back to Chennai

T. Nagar, or Thyagaraya Nagar, is Chennai’s busiest shopping district, famous for its silk saree stores, jewellery shops and crowded streets. It is also one of the most central neighbourhoods in the city, which makes it a practical meeting point for people coming from north and south Chennai. The pedestrian plaza on Pondy Bazaar has made the area much easier to walk, with wide footpaths, benches and plenty of small places to eat. On Myra, members in T. Nagar often receive introductions from Mambalam, Kodambakkam, Nungambakkam, Saidapet and Teynampet. Because the main streets are so crowded, many members prefer to meet in a café on a side street, or on a weekday afternoon when the shops are quieter. T. Nagar is close to the film industry hub of Kodambakkam and to the old residential streets around Panagal Park, so there is plenty to talk about. It suits people who enjoy energy and colour, and who like to explore a neighbourhood together on foot. During Deepavali and Pongal the whole district glows with lights and decorations, which is beautiful to see, though best saved for a later date rather than a first meeting. Its streets carry the names of Justice Party leaders from the 1920s, when it was planned as a garden suburb.

Where to meet in T. Nagar

  • Pondy Bazaar pedestrian plaza

Wide walkways with benches, street food and shops. A lively, public place for a first meeting in the evening.

  • Panagal Park

A small, shaded park at the centre of the shopping area, a pleasant pause between busy streets.

  • Side-street cafés

Cafés on the quieter streets off Usman Road and GN Chetty Road offer a calmer place to talk.

Getting around

Mambalam suburban railway station is next to Ranganathan Street, and Teynampet and Nandanam Metro stations are a short ride away. Traffic and parking are difficult, so public transport is best.

Good to know

  • Ranganathan Street is extremely crowded, especially before festivals. Avoid it for a first meeting and protect your belongings.
  • Agree on a café or a landmark on Pondy Bazaar, as phones can lose signal in very crowded streets.
